# Restore version

> Restores an older dataset family version as the new latest version.

## Overview

Restores an older [dataset](/node-library/nodes/dataset-ops-dataset) family version: the contents of the selected version become a new dataset version, which is now the latest in the family. The dataset history stays linear, because the restore itself is a new version rather than an in-place rollback.

## Prerequisites

| Requirement | What you need |
| ------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Version number** | A version number from an earlier [Create version](/node-library/nodes/dataset-ops-create-version) run. |

## How it works

Reads the source dataset and the requested version number.

Rebuilds that version into a new dataset and returns it.

## FAQ

#### Does restoring change the source dataset?

No. It creates a new dataset from the version and leaves the source dataset as it is.

#### Where do the version numbers come from?

From the [Create version](/node-library/nodes/dataset-ops-create-version) node, which returns a version number each time it snapshots a dataset.

#### Why did restore fail or return an incomplete dataset?

A version stores references to assets, not copies. Restore works only while those assets still exist in OvalBee.

## Inputs

**`Dataset`** `dataset` — required

Dataset whose version history is used. Key: `DATASET`.

---

**`Version`** `integer` — required

Version number to bring back. Its contents return as a new latest version, so the versions made since it are kept. Key: `VERSION`.

---

## Outputs

**`Dataset`** `dataset`

New latest dataset version with the restored contents. Key: `DATASET`.

---

## JSON config

Machine-readable node interface for automation and advanced usage.
